For a long time I have wanted to tackle making a really good bisquick substitute. Everything I have tried has been really lacking though. So I finally decided to combine some of the recipes I found and came up with this wonderful alternative.
Homemade Bisquick Mix
- 5 c. flour
- 2 T. baking powder
- 2 t. salt
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. dry milk powder
- 3/4 t. baking soda
- 1/2 c. butter or margarine
**To make pancakes, combine 1 1/2 c. mix with 1 egg and 1/2 - 1 c. water. (Start with a 1/2 c. water and add more as needed until desired consistency.)
Cheeseburger Pie
- 1/2 - 1 lb. ground beef or turkey
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 t. salt
- 1/2 t. garlic powder
- 2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 c. homemade bisquick mix
- 2 c. water
- 4 eggs
2. Cover with cheese. (If you are making this ahead of time, let the beef cool first.)
3. Whisk together mix, water and eggs. Pour over beef and cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
**This is very stolen moments-friendly. I made this at 10:00 am and it sat, uncooked, in the refrigerator until half an hour before dinner.

Oh, I used to make this all the time & I haven't made it in a long time. Yum! Gonna have to dig out the Bisquick! :)
That looks delish!
Thanks for the recipes!
I make something like that. I use cresent rolls and manwich.
I have been craving a recipe called Sausage-Onion Snacks. I'm so glad I found your blog, searching for an alternative to bisquick! I plan to post that recipe soon, and I'll link back to this post when I do.
I'll be back to delve into the archives. This sounds like exactly the kind of recipes I need!
I made this Cheeseburger pie last night and it was a dud. It looked awful and my family wouldn't go near it. Now I am wondering if my Bisquick was out of date, but I checked the box and that is not the case. I think if I added 2 cups of Bisquick it would have made ALL of the difference.
I want to make this work, do you know how long the homemade mix will last in the freezer?
Thanks so much for posting such wonderful looking recipes. Keep up the good work.

I'm enjoying your blog so much...your recipes are terrific, and well explained.
Omg I made this homemade bisquick mix to add to the cheeseburger pie recipie and my entire dinner was ruined,it tasted like ammonia.I at first thought the hamburger might have been bad but when I went to use it for pancakes the next morning they tasted of ammonia also.So therefore breakfast was also ruined. This is a horrible recipe I wouldn't suggest that anyone use it.(btw) all ingredients were measured properly.
